Endodontics or Root Canal Therapy

Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is a dental procedure used to treat infection or inflammation in the pulp and root canal system inside your tooth. This treatment can save a damaged tooth and restore its function.

What Causes Pulp or Root Canal Infection?

The pulp and surrounding root canals can become infected or inflamed due to:

  • Tooth decay (caries)
  • Deep cavities
  • Gum disease
  • Cracked or fractured teeth
  • Extreme tooth wear
  • Trauma or injury
  • Deterioration of an old filling or crown
  • Repeated dental procedures on the same tooth

Symptoms That May Indicate You Need Root Canal Treatment:

  • Pain when chewing or biting
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold foods
  • Swelling or tenderness in the surrounding gums
  • Persistent or spontaneous toothache

How Root Canal Therapy Works:

  1. Removal of Infected Tissue: The inflamed or infected pulp is carefully removed from the root canal system.
  2. Disinfection: The canals are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected to eliminate bacteria.
  3. Filling the Canals: The cleaned canal space is sealed with a special material to prevent reinfection.
  4. Tooth Restoration: To ensure long-term function and protection, the tooth is restored—often with a cuspal-protected restoration, such as a crown.
