Gums disease or Periodontal disease

Periodontal Disease (Gum Disease)

Periodontal disease refers to inflammation and infection of the gums, primarily caused by the buildup of plaque and calculus (tartar). It progresses in stages and can seriously impact your oral health if left untreated.

Gingivitis – Early-Stage Gum Disease

Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease. The most common sign is bleeding when brushing. Other signs may include mild redness and swelling of the gums.
Fortunately, gingivitis is completely treatable. Professional plaque and calculus removal by your dentist, combined with daily brushing and flossing at home, can restore your gum health.

Periodontitis – Advanced Gum Disease

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more serious form of gum disease.
Common signs include:

  • Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
  • Persistent bad breath or bad taste
  • Abscesses between the teeth and gums
  • Loose teeth or shifting teeth
  • New gaps appearing between teeth

Treatment involves a deep cleaning (also known as scaling and root planning) to remove calculus from below the gumline and tooth roots. After treatment, excellent oral hygiene at home and regular dental check-ups every 3 to 6 months are essential to manage the condition.

In more advanced or recurring cases, referral to a periodontist (gum specialist) may be necessary for further treatment.
